What to check.
Begin with title information
Use HM Land Registry’s official service for the relevant registered property in England or Wales. Check the title and address before drawing conclusions.
Identify the historical document
For an earlier period, follow the official guidance on available records and copies. Record the date and title number of each document you consult.
Keep identity and sale data separate
A price entry does not identify all past occupants or owners. Older documents may need to be read alongside archives and changes to the property’s address.
What the evidence cannot tell you.
HouseDossier does not provide a comprehensive list of past owners or residents. A blank search is not proof that land has no owner; unusual addresses and unregistered property need separate investigation.
